I (Teacher Certification. No. 710668) would like to take this opportunity to submit my application for the above listing.

With over 13 years’ experience, I have worked at Aga Academy (Senior School, International Baccalaureate Curriculum), Mombasa. My subjects were ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies) at Diploma Level, Year 9 Biology and MYP (Middle Year Programme) Integrated Science (Year 6 to 8). I have also at various stages of my career been Head of Science Department and Head of Academics at different schools – experiences and leadership positions that will prove beneficial to your organization.

My lessons borrow heavily from my teaching philosophy which is captured in William Butler Yeats’ quote: “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

I believe that a teacher is not a giver of knowledge but rather a facilitator for the student. As a guide, I try to create presentations that I feel help clarify key points. I shouldn’t be the one always delivering material. The student should make his/her own inquiry – all a teacher needs to do is establish what the student already knows and then act as a facilitator in connecting existing knowledge with new material. While this may not always be possible, every effort should be geared towards fostering an environment that leads to self-discovery as opposed to the mere passing on of new findings.

Such an approach when coupled with student-centered methodologies or strategies encourages curiosity and fosters critical thinking as well as problem-solving even in challenged learners.

A member of the IB Programme Resource Center, I apply a lot of ideas discussed in the online community Such online collaboration has helped me become the lifelong learner – both in subject matter and teaching methodology – in the ever-changing face of science.

My lessons involve IT technology for example simulations which help clarify misconceptions among students. EdTech has helped me evaluate the younger learners in a fun way for example the use of Kahoot. I also integrate other subjects and concepts in Biology/scientific inquiry for example Math and Physics, Physical Education (e.g. heartbeat research) and this makes the subject more meaningful and interesting to students.

To add on, I find that students who attend my academic support lessons benefit a lot from the more personalized learning and differentiated instruction. In such scenarios, I am able to learn what works best with different learners and this enables me tweak my normal lessons more effectively.

With extensive experience also in IGCSE Biology too, I trust that my capabilities, dynamism and competencies will sufficiently meet your strategic goals. Further, I have taken various professional development courses as follows:

  • IB Workshop on Managing Science Assessment, (MYP, Category 3), 13/04/2019 – 15/04/2019
  • IB Workshop on Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning (MYP, Category 3) 11/04/2018-13/04/2018
  • IB Workshop on Approaches to Learning, (MYP, Category 3), 8/04/2017- 10/04/2017
  • IB Workshop on Delivering the MYP curriculum (MYP, Category 2), 11/May/2016 – 12/Jun/2016
  • IB Workshop on Environmental Systems & Societies (Diploma level), Sept – Nov 2013

I have attached my CV which encapsulates my broad professional development as well as academic certificates for easy reference. I believe working with you will provide deep insights regarding best practices in education.

Looking forward to hearing from you, I thank you in advance.

    Personal tutor,

Last September (2021) I and a few colleagues set up an extra tuition center for IB Years 6 to Diploma level and A level (IGCSE). Students who need learning support pay for our services - we teach mostly the Sciences and Math. Though it started off very busy. the venture allowed more creativity with teaching and had flexible hours especially in the mornings. That allowed more quality time for lesson preparation and individualized teaching than a full-time job would. Also, there is a better work-life balance as compared with my previous place of work. Parents have reported a significant improvement in students’ grades as a result and this motivate to work even more resulting in more students joining us.
